English at Princes Hill Secondary College The English faculty at Princes Hill is committed to providing an experience of language and literature that is both challenging and enjoyable. Writing The school has a proud tradition of excellence in this area that the current faculty members are keen to maintain. Creative Writing has long been a focus at the school. In addition to being the setting for a number of novels, the school can claim many well known writers among its staff, students, and parents, both past and present. Writing is emphasised at all levels and we currently run a very popular Creative Writing elective at Years 9 and 10. Our location in North Carlton means that we have strong connections with the local ‘literati’ and visiting writers are a part of our program. We also run an in-house short story competition annually. Reading Reading is, of course, promoted in the classroom. From Years 7-10 the students are involved in ‘reading circles’ with their classes and provided with a weekly wide reading period in the library. The students also study a broad range of set texts. The English staff members all have their own interests in literature and are encouraged to share these with the students. As the ‘text response’ style of essay remains a key component of the VCE program, the skills involved are developed through the student’s time at the school. Students are also encouraged to discuss texts in class and share their ideas. Listening and Speaking This area is an integral part of the English curriculum at PHSC. At all levels, students will be involved in group and class discussions, oral presentations, reading texts aloud, debates, and dramatic presentations. The school has a large and successful debating program. In the past, individual students from this school have received the coveted ‘Swannie’ award. Shakespeare The faculty believe that William Shakespeare’s plays and poetry form the basis for the language and literature of English. His work is studied at virtually every level with the idea that the students will leave school having a greater sense of the possibilities of language. Every year travelling theatre companies perform a number of his plays for the students and excursions are organised to see larger professional productions. ICT Obviously, ICT has become an important medium for communication. From Years 7-10 students are given access to computers in the English classroom. They are involved in the creation of web pages, web logs, digital presentations, and, recently, the use of the ‘Kahootz' animation program. The possibilities for this type of technology in the English classroom are boundless and the faculty members at PHSC are keen to find new and productive ways to use it. VCE Literature Literature is a popular choice for VCE students at Princes Hill. There are currently two classes at Year 12 and one at Year 11. Contact KLA Coordinator – Prue Wales (03) 9389-0605
