Princes Hill Secondary College

welcome to the phsc esl page

The English as a Second Language Program at Princes Hill Secondary College aims to meet the needs of our diverse range of students, who come from non- English speaking backgrounds. The professional and caring staff at the College provide programs at each year level (7 - 12). Small class sizes allow students much scope for individual attention.

A VCE program runs at Years 11 and 12 in accordance with the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority curriculum. Many students attend English Language Centres for intensive English Language instruction before they enter the college.

In ESL classes a range of communicative language tasks build students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and focus on the structures and functions of the English language. Support is also provided to ESL learners in mainstream subject classes, through the elective program at Middle School.

The College fosters a strong multicultural policy, which encourages diversity throughout the college.

A wide variety of resources and experiences are used in ESL classes to support the teaching program.

The College has Multicultural Teachers’ Aides who support ESL students and teachers in Chinese, Turkish and Horn of Africa languages.
