Research skills are complex, and in the past you may have used many or all of the techniques used below.

: Looking for and locating the information you need from Web sites, books,
note taking etc.

: Selecting the information that you need from the resources you have found.

: Brainstorming the topic, ie where? when? what? who and how?

: Putting it all together, and checking that you have covered all the requirements of the task.

DEFINING

: What is it I want to know? Define your topic!
: What is the purpose of this research?

LOCATING

:What do I already know, and what is it I still need to find
out?
: What resources can I use \ where do I find the information I need? (example: encyclopaedias, CD-Roms, the library catalogue, Internet, newspapers etc.)

SELECTING

: Which information do I really need to use from the resources I have located?
ie how much of it is relevant to my topic?

: What information can I leave out?

: Is there any information that has been duplicated?

ORGANISING

: How can I use the information I have selected?

: How do I structure my information?

: How do I combine the information I have?

 

PRESENTING

: How can I best present the information I have? ( Poster, Power Point presentation, essay etc.)

: Who am I sharing this information with? (my class, the teacher, others?)

: Have I included a BIBLIOGRAPHY?

EVALUATING

: What did I learn from this?

: Did I fulfil the purpose of my assignment?

: Did I select the best way to present my information?
